If you are new to roller derby, you are not alone. For the uninitiated, roller derby’s popularity has grown leaps and bounds in the last decade since its resurgence in Austin, and it has evolved into a very serious and athletic sport. At the same time, roller derby has managed to hold on to the fun and quirky aspects like alter egos, tough personas, and flashy war paint that make it the ideal spectator sport for those looking to watch or participate in something highly competitive, but also a little different.

With leagues now forming all over the world, there is undoubtedly a league near you, and that is certainly the case in Southwest Houston as well. The Yellow Rose Derby Girls of Stafford, hold games in Rosenberg, Texas and play women’s flat track roller derby under the rules and procedures set forth by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association or WFTDA (wftda.com). In layman’s terms, this means the game is played on an oval track on a smooth, flat surface, which is slightly different than what you may have seen in movies or on television, but it is no less exciting.

The team is divided into blockers who play both defense and offense, and jammers who score points. It is the blockers’ job to help the jammer on the track with them to score points by racing to pass each skater on the opposite team, while at the same time preventing the opposing jammer from getting by to score any points. Each game is divided into two thirty minute halves made up of high-intensity two minute jams. The fast pace and simultaneous offensive and defensive moves make for a hard hitting, energetic game that is fun to play and attracts an enthusiastic fan base. You’ll be hooked after you see your first game.

Yellow Rose Derby Girls (YRDG) is a women’s flat track roller derby league that formed in February 2013 in the Southwest Houston area. About 35 ladies compose our two teams, the Yellow Rose Derby Girls All-Stars and the Yellow Rose Derby Girls Killer Bees. We are a skater owned and operated league with a wide variety of backgrounds – business owners, teachers, therapists, stay at home moms, and more. Aside from skating, we also do community service together. We are always recruiting (18 & up) and will teach you everything you need to know about roller derby. Many of our skaters are new to the sport, but we have incredible veterans guiding our practices in Stafford. Come have some fun and get an excellent workout!

It’s 2014, and our first full competitive season is upon us. We have several games (“bouts”) lined up, skating against other Texas leagues between March and November. Our next game on May 10 is also our first double header. Our All-Stars will face off against the Rocket City Roller Girls while our Killer Bees will take on Brazos Valley Derby Girls’ Prissyfits. Please join us Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds in Rosenberg, Texas for this exciting, family friendly event!

Would you like to be a skater, referee, coach, non-skating official, or a sponsor? We’d love to have you! Please see our Facebook page and website, www.yellowrosederbygirls.com, for game tickets, contact info, and more information on how to get involved, on or off skates.
