Oakland Elementary School students complete first triathlon
Oakland Elementary School students were among more than 2,000 children from across the state to take part in the Houston Kids Triathlon, held April 13 at the University of Houston. The event gave children the opportunity to experience the benefits of a healthy lifestyle focused on exercise by having them complete three athletic courses: swim, bike and run. This was the first triathlon for the Oakland Team.
Members of Oakland’s Triathlon Team included: second graders Hudson Baker, Ben Fullen, Carson Padilla, Harith Safian, Justin Smith, and Audrey Walters; third grader Zachary Phuong; fourth graders Anna Colley, Isabella Eavenson, Cassidee Levine, Emma Marvin, Meagan Walters; and fifth grader Isaiah Phuong.
To prepare for the event, Oakland team members either trained at an area YMCA that provided seven weeks of free training, twice a week with their Team Coach and PE teacher, Lesley Ocampo, or own their own.
“I am so proud of my students and their dedication,” said Ocampo. “It takes a great deal of discipline to balance their school work, STAAR testing and other extra-curricular activities in addition to training for the triathlon. The support of their parents, teachers and peers was also amazing. We are all excited about next year’s triathlon.”
