FBJSL awards 2 students college scholarships for volunteerism!
The Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) was pleased to present Claire Lucas and Poonam Vaidya college scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each for their outstanding volunteer efforts in Fort Bend County. The recipients were chosen from a highly qualified pool of applicants from public, private and parochial schools throughout Fort Bend County. The winners stood out among the other candidates as leaders in their schools as well as in their various volunteer efforts.
Claire Lucas of Dulles High School has contributed 270 hours of community and school service hours throughout her high school career. She was one of the teens selected to serve on the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Youth Crew where she contributed 180 hours helping to raise funds to fight Breast Cancer. Claire is Vice President of her high school Spanish Club and a member of the Spanish Honor Society, tutors bilingual elementary school students weekly at Bethel Ministries, teaches middle school students weekly at St. Laurence Catholic Church and is currently working on her Girl Scout Gold Award. Claire has been accepted at Texas State University, Stephen F. Austin State University, University of Houston and University of St. Thomas.
Poonam Vaidya of Stephen F. Austin High School has contributed 770 hours of community and school service hours throughout her high school career in addition to holding Leadership positions in the National Honor Society, Austin Angels Dance Team and Austin Link Crew. She has contributed service hours at Bethel Ministry, Volunteer Houston Holiday Card Project, YES (Youth Expanding Services) and Samskriti-Indian Performing Arts/Naach Houston. Poonam achieved her Girl Scout Gold Award organizing and teaching a dance camp at Texana Center. Poonam will attend the University of Texas at Austin in the fall.
FBJSL is honored to provide these two very deserving young ladies with the 2014 Volunteer Scholarships.
