At its May 5 meeting, the Missouri City City Council proclaimed May 2014 as Building Safety Month. Members of Development Service’s Permits and Inspections Team were honored in front of Council with a copy of the Council proclamation.

“Building Safety Month 2014 encourages appropriate steps everyone can take to ensure that the places where we live, learn, work, worship and play are safe and sustainable,” Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen said. “Building safety: maximizing resilience, minimizing risk is the theme for Building Safety Month 2014. It encourages all Americans to raise awareness of the importance of building safe and resilient construction, fire prevention, disaster mitigation, backyard safety energy efficiency and new technologies in the construction industry.”

During May, City staff will be continuing efforts to address the critical issues of safety, energy efficiency and resilience that affect citizens both in every day life and in times of natural disaster.

“Our Building Maintenance Staff gives us confidence that our structures are safe and sound,” Mayor Owen said. “Our confidence is achieved through the devotion of diligent guardians, building safety and fire prevention officials, architects, engineers, builders, trades people, laborers and others in the construction industry who work year-round to ensure the safe construction of our buildings.”

Citizens are encouraged to follow modern building codes that act as safeguards to protect the public from natural disasters such as hurricanes, snow storms, tornadoes, wild land fires and earthquakes. Staff has printed safety material available to residents who visit City Hall; a list of International Code Council safety tips is also available from their website at

“The Permits and Inspections team is seen by many of our citizens on an individual basis,” Development Services Director Gary Smith said during the team’s recognition by Council. “They’re rarely seen together as a group that protects us with building safety, inspections, planned review and permitting.”
