Susan Javiera Burris Cavazos
SUSAN JAVIERA BURRIS CAVAZOS, passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2014, in Sugar Land Texas. Susan was born on April 19, 1947, in Magnolia, Mississippi to Norman and Javiera Burris. The family moved to Freeport, TX in the early 1950’s. They later moved to Lake Jackson, TX where Susan grew up and graduated from Brazosport High School in 1965. She attended Stephen F. Austin State University in the late 1960’s and graduated with a B.A. degree in Spanish and English. She later went on to receive her Master’s degree in Education Administration from the University of Houston.
Susan married Amado Cavazos of Mexico City, Mexico in 1969, and began substitute teaching in the Spring Branch I.S.D. of the Houston area. Subsequently, when they started a family, she went to teach at Dulles High School in Fort Bend I.S.D. When Clements High School opened in 1983, she was named as chair person of the Foreign Language Department and held that position until 2011.
Susan was a devoted mother, wife, aunt, sister, daughter, and friend. She dedicated her heart and her life to her family, friends, and to the students whom she taught. She was a master teacher. She will be greatly missed by all those who know and love her.
She is survived by her husband, Amado Cavazos, her daughter, Sara Cavazos Mahoney of Charleston, South Carolina, her two grandchildren, Lila and Nolan Mahoney, her daughter, Ami Cavazos LaMotta of Missouri City, TX, and her brothers Charles N. Burris of Richmond, TX, and Richard W. Burris of Knoxville, TN.
