Huggins Elementary, with a little help from friends, paid $15,000 for a cake at Surf’s Up.  Joe Rangel with Allegiance Roofing, Friends of Huggins, HDH Instruments, Simonton Veterinary, and State Representative John Zerwas M.D. contributed to helped Huggins set the record amount paid for a cake.

Lamar CISD teachers will be busy this summer drafting ideas for grants from the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation. While the teachers are always looking for innovative ways to educate students, they know the funds will be there, due to the success of Surf’s Up presented by OakBend Medical Center.

“Our beach party is becoming the social event of the year,” said L.E.A.F. President Judi Vernon. “More than 1,200 people enjoyed dancing to the Triumphs, and after the bills were paid, more than $86,000 was raised to underwrite teacher grants for next fall! Thanks again to OakBend Medical Center for their support in underwriting Surf’s Up.”

“We are delighted to be a community partner with the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation,” said Joe Freudenberger, CEO of OakBend. “Surf’s Up is a great event, a lot of fun and a pleasure to sponsor.”

After the crowd enjoyed a Vincek’s chicken-fried steak dinner, auctioneer Jeff Council, with help from Vincent Morales, got the crowd into a lively bidding totaling $66,800 for the 20 desserts donated by L.E.A.F supporters.

Huggins Elementary, with a little help from their friends, purchased Cheryl Koteras’ Salted Caramel Chocolate Kahlua cake for $15,000.

Smith Elementary had the largest attendance of any LCISD school with 79 and Wertheimer Middle School had the largest attendance of any secondary school.
