Hurricane season begins June 1

The 2014 hurricane season starts next month and it is predicated as being near normal or below normal, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Of eight to 13 named storms with winds of 39 mph or higher, three to six could become hurricanes with winds of 74 mph or higher, including one to two major hurricanes in a category 3, 4 or 5 with winds of 111 mph or higher.  The seasonal average is 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

Keep in mind, that it takes only one land falling hurricane to cause a disaster, remind forecasters. Stay tuned to local officials with advisories during hurricane season.  A popular hurricane evacuation plan sign suggests to do two things…grab beer and run like crazy.  Maybe that’s not such a good idea.  Stay tuned to advisories and be mindful of those plans.
