Held earlier this month at Sugar Land’s Telfair community, the 6th annual TelfairLife Charity of Your Choice Walk drew 414 walkers and raised more than $17,805 to benefit 12 Fort Bend charities.

Several award winners were recognized at the end of the Walk, including Child Advocates, which won the Charity Challenge for the charity with the most registered walkers. With 150 walkers, Child Advocates received a $1,000 cash prize in addition to 100% of registration fees paid by all of its walkers.

Blessed Be Hope for Three won the second-place award of $750, with 49 registered walkers. The third-place award for $250 went to the Fort Bend ISD Education Foundation, which had 40 walkers.

Child Advocates also won the Team Challenge prize of $1,000 with its “No Excuse for Child Abuse” team, which had 126 walkers.

Four individual walkers each received $500 Walker Challenge awards for their charities. These awards went to the individuals who raised the most money for the charities of their choice. Darla Farmer raised $923 for Blessed Be Hope for Three, and Cynthia Barratt raised $550 for Child Advocates. Josefina Porto Morado raised $235 for NAMI Fort Bend, and Jeff Anderson raised $100 for Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity.

With this year’s total donations, the Charity of Your Choice Walk has raised more than $300,000 for Fort Bend charities since it began in 2008.

“Since the TelfairLife Charity of Your Choice Walk began, our incredible walkers and volunteers have made significant contributions to the quality of life in Fort Bend County, especially for many of our youngest and most vulnerable community members served by our participating charities,” said Maureen Murray, TelfairLife coordinator. “The more this annual event succeeds, the more Fort Bend benefits.”

In addition to the charities named above, other charities benefiting from this year’s Charity of Your Choice Walk included The Arc of Fort Bend, Brazos Guardianship Services, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry, Literacy Council of Fort Bend County, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels, Second Mile Mission Center, and Fort Bend Rainbow Room.
