Kelly Rice at Oyster Creek ELementary awarded gift card in “Celebrate Teachers”

In recognition of National Teacher’s Day on Tuesday, May 6, First Colony Mall awarded Ms. Kelly Rice, a third-grade English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher at Oyster Creek Elementary School, a $500 Shop Etc. mall gift card.

Rice was nominated for Celebrate Teachers!, the mall’s campaign to recognize the top-performing teachers in the community, in March. She received the most votes that were cast on First Colony Mall’s Facebook page.

Ms. Rice, a third-year teacher, said the nomination came as a surprise to her and to see everyone voting for her was a true blessing. “I love learning and growing with kids. There is nothing in the world that beats being there for kids and helping them discover their true potential,” she said. Ms. Rice has a September wedding planned and the couple has just bought a house in Fort Bend, and she indicated that some of the money will go towards helping those dreams come true and some will be used to purchase newer books for her classroom library.

This is the second year that First Colony Mall has sponsored Celebrate Teachers! to recognize the top-performing teachers in the area. Last year’s top vote getter was Brittany Rackar Pineda, a chemistry and AP biology teacher at Lamar Consolidated.

All teachers who were nominated are part-time or full-time, state-licensed teachers who work in a pre-k to 12th grade nonprofit school (public or private).
