Sugar Land Skeeters’ Michael Nix signs with San Diego Padres
The Sugar Land Skeeters announced today that starting pitcher Michael Nix has signed with the San Diego Padres organization and will join its Triple A El Paso club. With Nix’s signing, the Skeeters have now witnessed two players sign with affiliated clubs this season, including Dustin Martin to the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier this month.
Nix, 31, went 2-1 with a 2.00 ERA in five starts for Sugar Land this season, collecting a team-best 23 strikeouts in his 27.0 innings pitched. His 23 strikeouts ranked tied for fourth place in the Atlantic League following his last start on May 19, while his 2.00 ERA ranked sixth among pitchers.
In 2013, the Alabama native went 9-2 with a 1.88 ERA in 14 games (12 starts) for the Skeeters. He also spent time with the Chicago White Sox organization, combining for a 4-4 record and 5.62 ERA over 11 games (10 starts) with Triple A Charlotte and Double A Birmingham. The right-hander earned Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month honors in May 2013 prior to signing with Chicago, after he went 5-0 with a League-best 0.00 ERA in five starts, spanning 30.1 innings pitched. Nix returned to Sugar Land in September for the Atlantic League Division Series and became the first Skeeters pitcher to ever start a postseason game on September 17 against the Somerset Patriots.
Originally selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round of the June 2005 Draft out of Auburn University, Nix is 45-39 with a 3.76 ERA over 10 professional minor league seasons.
