Career Planning outweighs recess at Austin Parkway Elementary School
Austin Parkway Elementary School students were less excited about recess and more focused on career planning recently as they took part in their school’s newly-revamped Career Day event. Rather than have speakers visit each classroom as they have done in the past, the students signed up to attend four sessions focusing on their career choices.
More than 40 adult speakers visited the campus to provide students with details about their careers and educational experiences. Among them were veterinarians, Homeland Security personnel, doctors, photographers, entrepreneurs, marine scientists and a stay-at-home mom.
Dr. Charles Dupre, FBISD Superintendent of Schools, was also present to help motivate and inspire students to become all they can be in life. He encouraged the students to work hard in school and to be prepared to overcome obstacles they may face.
“This was an exciting event for everyone involved,” said Donna Whisonant, principal at Austin Parkway Elementary. “We appreciate the speakers and our event coordinator, Counselor Mary Prine, for investing their time and efforts toward our students’ futures.”
