By LeaAnne Klentzman
Early on Monday morning, June 23, at about 3 am, a Houston Park Ranger made a security loop through the Houston owned and operated Cullinan Park just north of Sugar Land Airport on State Highway 6S in Fort Bend County.
As Ranger Conrad Wilturner made his rounds through the closed park he discovered a sexual assault in progress. He intervened attempting to help the female victim. During his attempt to stop the assault, Ranger Wilturner was brutally beaten by the suspect with a steel pipe. Wilturner was repeatedly beat in the head and face by the pipe wielding sexual assault suspect identified as Migueal Velasquez, 25, of Houston.
While Ranger Wilturbner was being transported to Houston via air ambulance, and the sexual assault victim was treated for her injuries; police from several jurisdictions combed the area.
Velasquez was located and arrested by Houston police in a place he was known to frequent, the 7200 block of Clarewood in the Sharpstown area.
Velasquez has been charged with Aggravated Assault of a Public Servant, Sexual Assault and Assault (Family Violence). His initial combined bond was set at $750,000 by Fort Bend County Associate District Judge Ruiz.
Ranger Wilturner faces a lengthy recovery and a series of reconstructive surgeries.
