Karl’s is back and in a new location. On an end-cap of a strip center just north of 90A, this place is smaller and more casual than his original restaurant. The interior décor was considerably simple, with nothing on the windows, neutral paint on the walls, and a few sparse pictures here and there. Perhaps that was to draw your attention to the two large hand painted landscape murals on two of the walls. Gone are the white table clothes giving way to bare black tabletops.

A sample of the menu items are Swiss Bratwurst with Sauteed Onions, Pork Schnitzel, Pork Geschnetzlets, Liver & Onions, Chicken fried Chicken, and other steak, fish and seafood choices. I was delighted to see wild game dinner offerings including venison, quail, wild boar, and Elk. Equally refreshing was to see entire sections devoted to more healthy Atkins-friendly dinners, vegetarian dinners, and low-fat dinners.

Seafood gumbo was the soup of the day. It had an ample amount of seafood in it including fish, shrimp, crawfish, and crab in a light brown stock. Not being very spicy, I have had better, but it wasn’t bad. The pork schnitzel (chicken fried pork steak) was lightly breaded in Panko crumbs and served on top of a dark brown gravy. Served with red cabbage and rice pilaf. The steak was quite tasty and the rich dark gravy gave it a robust flavor. For dessert, the chocolate mousse was tasted that was quite rich but light, and had a very good flavor and texture.

The service was generally good, but the entrees were brought out before we could get two bites out of the soup and salad. That meant it was sitting there getting cold while we rushed to finished the first course. Noticably poor timing there. Overall it was a pleasant experience. For lunch we each got out of there for under $20. Not bad for the amount and quality of food.
