Carter Publications Inc., owners of the Fort Bend Star, Fort Bend Business Journal and Star Video have tapped a new management team, effective immediately.

Jonathan McElvy, who has worked in newspapers across the Houston metro area for more than eight years, has been named publisher of The Star and Fort Bend Business Journal, according to Michael Fredrickson, president of Carter Publications Inc.

“I have gotten to know Jonathan over the past year, and we’ve had a lot of conversations about The Star and my desire to see it grow,” Fredrickson said. “It’s important to me, and it’s important to the legacy my mother left, that we do everything possible to give our readers a strong, community newspaper, and I believe Jonathan can help us get there.”

McElvy was formerly vice president of content for Houston Community Newspapers from 2006-2012. In July 2012, he purchased The Leader newspaper, which covers the Heights, Garden Oaks and Oak Forest areas of Houston. He will continue to own and operate The Leader while taking over management duties for Carter Publications Inc.

“For almost 37 years, I know The Star has been a fixture in this community. In taking this position with Carter Publications, my job is to come in and reinvigorate the role we play in the lives of our readers,” McElvy said. “Cosmetically, I think you’ll see a lot of initial changes, and we hope those are for the better. But where I really hope our readers see the greatest improvement is in the stories we write and the product we deliver to you every week.”

In one of his first moves with Carter Publications, McElvy has named Michael Sudhalter as the new editor. Sudhalter, who has covered Fort Bend County during his tenure with the Sugar Land Sun, most recently served as editor of The Leader.

“Michael Sudhalter is going to do a lot of great things with the content of this newspaper,” McElvy said. “I have known and worked with Michael for more than five years, and he is a young man who understands the responsibility of editing a local newspaper. His stories will be fresh, and his priority will be to create a weekly newspaper and daily website that reflect the great things happening in Sugar Land, Missouri City, Stafford and all of the wonderful neighborhoods within our distribution area.”

Sudhalter says he looks forward to the challenge of

re-energizing The Star and the people

featured in this newspaper every week.
