Civil Servant of the Week: Clements High’s Rustin Buck
By Michael Sudhalter
Clements High German teacher, Rustin Buck, was caught off guard this morning when a camera crew from Great Day Houston entered his classroom. Buck was surprised with the Red Apple Teacher of the Month Award for August 2014, presented by Great Day Houston and Star Furniture in recognition of teachers who make a difference in students’ lives.
Courtney Perna, Great Day Houston Feature Reporter/Producer, joined Bill Barnum of Star Furniture, Clements Principal David Yaffie and a host of Buck’s colleagues in surprising Buck with a visit to his classroom. Buck admitted he was surprised by the award, but had an idea something was going on when the crowd entered his classroom.
“This is a great way to start the school year,” said Bill Barnum, Star Furniture Store Manager. “Star Furniture is committed to education and we thank Mr. Buck for his hard work.”
Buck was nominated for the award by Clements graduate and current Northwestern University student, Aditya Jain. “Mr. Buck put so much time and energy into helping students,” said Jain. “He also fostered my love of the German language.”
Buck has been a teacher in Fort Bend ISD for the past 19 years.
In 2013, Buck was one of only three teachers in the nation to receive the German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award presented by the German Embassy in Washington in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut and the American Association of teachers of German.
