FBISD holds Community Meetings on Revised GPA System and HB5 High School Graduation Plans
Fort Bend ISD will host two Community Meetings to inform parents/guardians of current sixth, seventh and eighth grade students of the revised Grade Point Average (GPA) System and House Bill 5 (HB5) High School Graduation Plan and Endorsements that are now in effect.
Parents can choose to attend one of the following Community Meetings:
Thursday, September 18 – FBISD Administrative Annex (3119 Sweetwater Blvd., Sugar Land 77479) – 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, September 24 – Dulles High School Rodgers Auditorium (550 Dulles Ave., Sugar Land 77478) – 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
New GPA Revisions
On August 10, the FBISD Board of Trustees approved the District’s recommendation to revise the GPA System, beginning with the current eighth-grade students who will enter high school in 2015-2016. (The new GPA system will not be used for current students in grades 9-12.)
While determining GPA will not apply to many students until they begin high school, there are students who complete high school course work in the middle school setting. All grades earned in middle school for high school credit will be posted on the high school transcript and will be used in the GPA calculation. Therefore, it is imperative that families understand the new system that is now in place.
Middle school principals will share additional information on the revised GPA system at their Open House events on September 17.
HB5 High School Graduation Plan and Endorsements
High school students will now benefit from several changes resulting from HB5 and other education bills that were signed into law during the 83rd Legislative session. Students will benefit from reduced testing, more flexibility in core course options, and strategic use of courses (core and electives) to earn endorsements (in specific areas of concentration, including STEM, Business/Industry, Public Services, Arts and Humanities, and Multidisciplinary Studies). Students can also focus on academics, fine arts, JROTC or Career and Technical Education.
