The Fort Bend County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated presented its 2nd annual poster arts contest and exhibit on February 26, at the DeWalt Heritage Center in Missouri City, TX. Twenty posters were selected for the exhibit from more than sixty entries provided by seventh and eighth grade art students of Missouri City Middle School.
The theme of the poster arts contest and exhibit for this year was “Healthy, Active, and Wise – Make Health a Habit”. Students were asked to use this theme to develop posters representing healthy and active lifestyles. The arts teacher at Missouri City Middle School, Kimberly Suenkel, encouraged the students to use their imaginations in support of this theme.
The winner of the local poster arts contest, Quichelle Tyrel, will represent Fort Bend County in the National Links Poster Arts Contest in April. Quichelle received a $100 gift certificate as the local winner. Second and third place winners, Michael Perez and Jennifer Velasquez, also received gift certificates. All of the students were awarded certificates of participation.
The venue for the contest and exhibit, the DeWalt Heritage Center, is an historic Fort Bend landmark. The Dew House was built around 1900 in the heart of what is now Missouri City, TX. Originally a sugar plantation, the original structure was restored during the 2000’s and moved to its present location in Kitty Hollow Park. An exciting visitor at the event was Nancy Stephenson Woods who was born and raised on the property. She is one of the remaining descendants of the African American workers on the plantation. A book describing her life on the property was written in her honor by the publicity chair of the Fort Bend County Links, Margaret A. Graham, and presented to her during the reception following the exhibit. Her daughter and granddaughter were also in attendance.
The Arts committee of the Fort Bend County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated was responsible for organizing and implementing this event. Members of the committee are:
Margaret Washington, Chair; Linda Ball; Karen Burton; Faye Gerard; Margaret A. Graham; Carolyn Grovey-Brown Stevens; Kelon Jefferson; Bari Jenks; Tameka Lord; Alice Thompson, VP Programs; Jean Thompson; and Jan Woodson. The President of the Fort Bend County Links is Kimberly Mayberry.
