Stranger danger/kidnap prevention tips offered

More than 100 members of Sugar Land’s Asian community are expected to participate in a stranger danger/kidnapping prevention presentation April 26, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, at the Fame Well Montessori School, 2317 Settlers Way Blvd.

SLPD is partnering with 1320AM Texas Chinese Radio and the Fort Bend Chinese American Association to offer interactive “Stranger-Danger” demonstrations for children.

The program is a continuation of Sugar Land’s effort to build strong relationships in the community that better enable citizens to partner with police to prevent crime.

“Education is among our most effective tools to ensure Sugar Land remains one of the nation’s safest cities,” said Officer Amy Cummins, of the SLPD’s crime prevention unit. “We want our children to recognize dangerous situations and respond effectively.”

Nationally certified instructors will teach children how to react to dangerous situations – replacing fear, confusion and panic with confidence, personal safety skills and self-esteem. Children and their parents will be encouraged to utilize knowledge, skills, and power to protect themselves from violence and harm.

Reinforcement of the following rules will be accompanied by specific techniques to avoid and escape from harmful situations:

• Stay an arm’s reach plus away from strangers. Stand up, back up and run to someone who can help you if you feel afraid.

• Don’t talk to strangers.

• Don’t take anything from strangers - not even your own things.

• Don’t go anywhere with someone you don’t know.

“Reducing children’s vulnerability requires that parents and children have basic information about stranger offenders and how they behave,” said Cummins. “It includes understanding what children believe about strangers and how that makes them more vulnerable. This presentation will help parents and children develop specific ground rules to enhance personal safety around strangers.”

In addition, Sugar Land officers will discuss self-defense tips for adults and appropriate merchandise for personal protection.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. on the day of the presentation. For more information, contact Judd Huang at (832) 287-8898.
