Star Riders of Fort Bend is making a difference

Riding motorcycles isn’t the only pastime the Star Riders enjoy; for the last 10 years, this Fort Bend County group has also been donating their time and resources to help kids at DePelchin’s Residential Treatment Center in Richmond, Texas.

“The Star Riders have made a huge impact on our children,” said Curtis C. Mooney, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of DePelchin Children’s Center. “From providing school supplies and toys, to playing a friendly game of volleyball and hosting old-fashioned cookouts, this group is consistently involved in doing what they can to let our kids know that somebody cares for them. We can’t thank the Star Riders enough for what they do.”

DePelchin’s Residential Treatment Center provides services for children ages 5-to-17 who need a stable environment and intensive treatment beyond outpatient or day treatment services. The program treats children and adolescents who suffer from conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, abuse, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder and other behavioral issues. The Richmond Center helps children between 5 and 11 years of age.

The Star Riders provide the center’s children with fun activities throughout the year which include large barbeques and picnics, trips to the Houston Zoo, school shopping sprees, sporting activities and more. During the holiday season, the Star Riders also provide Thanksgiving dinner for all the children and help them create Christmas wish lists, which they fill during their annual toy run.

“Each year we volunteer is a blessing. We feel incredibly fortunate for this opportunity to connect with so many amazing children,” said Harold Porter, president of the Star Riders group. “Our overall mission is to bring happiness to every child at the center and, like DePelchin, we feel that no child in Ft. Bend should ever be overlooked. It’s a commitment and tradition that we will be proud to honor for years to come. ”
