The University of Houston Black Alumni Association (UHBAA) honored Sugar Land
Councilwoman Jacqueline (Jacquie) Baly Chaumette at its Annual Scholarship Gala recently at the JW Marriott Hotel at 5150 Westheimer Road. This year is significant as it marks the 20th Anniversary of the founding of the Association.
The momentous evening honored Councilmember Jacqueline Chaumette and other outstanding alumni for their extraordinary professional, social and dedicated service to the Houston region.
Other honorees are: The Honorable Calvin W. Stephens, Member, UH System Board of Regents; Kevin Sumlin, UH Football Head Coach; Dennis Kennedy, ED., Texas Diversity Council; Carla Lane, President, Diverse Staff a Lane Staffing Company; Derrick Mitchell, Partner, Bracewell
& Giuliani LLP; and James S. Walker, II, President, Walker Architects.
Over the past 20 years, UHBAA has awarded scholarships to deserving students who exhibit good academic standing, leadership qualities and financial need at the University of Houston. The theme, “Planted. Strong. Enduring.” reflects that UHBAA was planted 20 years ago by
Honorary Chair, Gene Locke and others; remains strong in numbers and has a rich history; and endures with the support of past honorees and friends and gifted alumni who strengthen UHBAA’s lasting vision. Mr. Locke is a partner at the Andrews & Kurth law firm as well as a candidate for
