Richmond shooting sparks controversy

By LeaAnne Klentzman

Sometimes it’s not the story but the superfluous details that give a story legs. Last week a man was shot in the leg at a Richmond apartment. He was taken to the hospital, rendered medical attention and told police he did not want to file charges. Since the law does not work that way, police investigated.

As they investigated, police discovered the victim gave them erroneous information about where he was when he was shot. Law enforcement officials have yet to publicly say whether he did it intentionally or if he just didn’t know where he was visiting. Once they found the apartment, they found their crime scene.

Reportedly, blood and the bullet that traveled through he victim’s thigh were found in and on the couch. The victim has yet to be publicly identified by Richmond police, however, a local daily in west Fort Bend County identified him based on law enforcement sources. Furthermore, they identified the lessee of the apartment, not the shooter.

The story used those legs to sprint when it is revealed that the lessee is the 21 year old daughter of a Richmond police lieutenant Billy Frank Teague and a retired Sheriff’s department detective Sergeant Joan Teague. Their daughter has not been charged with a crime.

Nor to date has anyone implied that either parent was at the scene trying to influence the investigation. When asked, the Teague’s said they were at Jessica’s apartment as parents and in no way a part of the investigation. “We love and support our daughter. Other than that we have no comment. ”

As the investigation unfolded, forensic tests revealed that Jessica Teague had not been involved in the shooting. Teague told police she was awakened by the sound of a gunshot. When she ran from her bedroom into the living area of her apartment, she found her boyfriend and his buddy. The two 21 year old men had been playing video games and partying throughout the night when one pulled a pistol on the other. According to officials, the first one to pull the gun was the last one on the trigger – resulting in his buddy being shot in the leg.

According to police Ms. Teague, a Richmond vet tech, loaded the victim into her truck and took him to Oak Bend Medical Center for treatment then returned to her apartment. Shortly thereafter law enforcement arrived and an investigation ensued. To date no charges have been filed.

Much ado has been made over the fact that the lessee’s father is a law enforcement official and former candidate for sheriff and that her mother is a retired sheriff’s detective. However, at no point has any claim of undo influence been directed toward either Teague parent.

The incident remains under investigation.
