ACHIEVE Fort Bend County supports summer reading program

ACHIEVE Fort Bend County spearheaded a summer reading program for first graders attending Title 1 schools throughout the county.

Facilitators from each of the school districts worked with ACHIEVE Board Member Cathy Duvall, a former Fort Bend ISD leader in reading, to identify eligible students and to document their reading levels. Books were then ordered to match student needs and interests.

Special ceremonies were held at numerous schools to give each first grader his or her own packet of books, encased in book bags donated by Classic Chevrolet and many were delivered with care by Fort Bend County constables.

ACHIEVE Board President James Patterson noted that the initiative could not occur without the generous support of the numerous individuals, community groups and foundations throughout Fort Bend County. With that coordination, more than 720 students received brand new books with their name in each.

ACHIEVE is a community-based organization that seeks to support schools in the county as they focus on keeping students in school and reducing the dropout rate.
