After advancing through several phases of state and national competition, the Stephen F. Austin High School Navy Junior ROTC Varsity Air Rifle team, composed of Amanda Major, Anthony Vais, Jeremy Williams, Jack Chen, and Richard Nguyen, has been invited to compete in the Navy JROTC Air Rifle Championship in Anniston, Al., February 21–24, 2013. The team has worked very hard, putting in hundreds of hours over the past 2-4 years.
Cadet Master Chief Petty Officer Mandi Major, the team’s Captain, is extremely proud of how her team has significantly improved over the past 5 months, reflecting a net team gain of over 50 points. According to the team’s Coach, LCDR Ed Sellards, “Mandi has proven to be an outstanding team Captain, setting the highest standards of excellence by consistently out shooting her male teammates while challenging them to raise their expectations to the highest level.” This will be Mandi’s second time to Navy Service Nationals, attending during her junior year as the Area 10 NJROTC Manager individual shooter’s pick.
Stephen F. Austin High School NJROTC is 1 of only 2 teams from Texas and among only 21 teams, representing 639 Navy JROTC Units worldwide, competing at the National Championship in the Sporter Air division. This significant achievement represents a unit first for SF Austin NJROTC! Congratulations to all members of the Air Rifle Team, their proud families, and the entire NJROTC Unit.
This Navy Service National Championship event is sponsored by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and the Naval Service Training Command, the U.S. Navy Command overseeing the NJROTC Program nationwide.
