Baines Middle School hosted an author visit on January 18 that welcomed Gary Soto. The event was coordinated by Laura Downes, Library Media Specialist at Baines.
Soto is the author of 11 poetry collections, most notably New and Selected Poems, which was named a 1995 finalist for both the Los Angeles Times Book Award and the National Book Award. During his visit to Baines, Soto read excerpts from copies of his books, including Nerd Landia, Accidental Love, Local News and Hey 13! He also reminded students that like any profession, writing takes dedication and commitment.
Soto also shared details about his childhood in Fresno, California, and of how he became a writer. “I began writing poetry when I was 11 years old and in love with a girl named Lupita,” Soto said. “She broke my heart and after that, I spent a lot time in the library reading poetry books. I then started writing my own poems, and the rest, as they say, is history.”
Following his remarks, Soto autographed copies of his books for students and staff.
