Congratulations are in store for five Baines Middle School students who are winners in this years “Our World, Our Future” Peace Poster Contest. Julia Hurter took 1st place with a colorful poster of the world as a backdrop with two doves flying east and west pulling flags from many nations. Jack Fisher was a close 2nd place with a black & white wingspread dove pulling the earth with a band of flags from many nations. Abigail Fung took 3rd place with a peaceful drawing of a dove above a peace sign entangled with vines. Their leaves were many small colorful flags. Madeleine Cole’s depiction of a large wingspread eagle at night clutching a peace sign with a backdrop of fireworks and Samantha Madamba’s colorful flags in the shape of hearts and were given an honorable mention.
Baines Art Teacher Liz Buckingham stated, “I am impressed by the expression and creativity of theses 23 participants. It is obvious that these artistic students have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I am proud of all of them.”
The contest was sponsored by the Stafford-Missouri City Lions Club. This is the 25th year that The Lions Club International has held a peace contest. The goal is to encourage young people, ages 11-13, to think about the importance of peace, creatively express what it means to them and to share their own unique visions with others. The Baines MS “Our World, Our Future” Peace Poster Contest collection is currently on display at the Sienna Branch of the Fort Bend County Library through December 15. You can vote for the “most popular” winner by putting your vote in the comment box at this display.
