Barfield’s walk-off single lifts Skeeters in 10th

By Bill McCaughey
For the Fort Bend Star

Jeremy Barfield singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat the Bridgeport Bluefish 2-1, and give the Sugar Land Skeeters their fifth win in a row.

Ian Marshall started for the Skeeters and gave up just one run and three hits in his five innings. The Bluefish scored their only run in the 2nd inning on a Jose Cuevas single and three walks. Chris Rearick, Jon Velasquez, Zech Zinicola and Robbie Weinhardt shutout the Bluefish for the last 5 innings, giving up only one hit. Weinhardt earned his second win on the season.

In the 4th inning, Ricky Hague doubled and Jeff Dominguez singled him home for the Skeeters first run. In the 7th, the Skeeters flashed some leather as Beamer Weems made a nice running catch on a popup and Hague fielded a hot ground ball to keep the Bluefish from threatening.

In the bottom of the 10th, Josh Prince led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Hague. Jeff Dominguez was intentionally walked, and after a strike out, Jeremy Barfield singled in Prince with the winning run.

Prince, Barfield and Patrick Palmeiro led the Skeeters with two hits each. Weems was ejected in the 9th inning for arguing strike calls. For the Bluefish, Jose Cuevas had two of their four hits and Ruben Sosa Jr. had a walk to extend his on-base streak to a team record 16 consecutive games.
