Brightwater Garden Club celebrates 25 years

When Janet Love founded the Brightwater Garden Club in Missouri City, 25 years ago, she didn’t know just how successful it would become.

As the club celebrated its milestone recently, past president and founder Love said living in a new neighborhood was the reason for starting the garden club. “Eastshore was one of the few streets developed at the time. It was such a new neighborhood, with no clubs, people there wanted to get involved with their neighbors”. Love, a graduate of Southwest Texas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, started the first meeting with 12 people. Original charter members Diane Giltner and Joanie Sharpe are still actively involved, and new members are added every year – both from Brightwater and the surrounding communities. Upcoming topics at the meetings include Grow Your Own – Vegetable Gardening 101 and Garden Makeovers.

Celebrating the anniversary recently included past presidents Betty Grant, Cathy Monyoya-Van Hoose, Nancy Hudson, Carol deBoer and Grace Clarke. The Club has seven meetings a year, and business meetings account for only three times a year. Now with over 35 members, the Club continues the traditional Yard of the Month, judging for the outdoor Holiday Decorations, Missouri City’s “Earth Day” program at Southminster School, support local horticultural and community non-profits, and advise sponsors of Lexington Creek Elementary School Butterfly Garden.
