Oyster Creek Elementary School kindergarten teacher, Brittany Mayland, recently received the surprise of a lifetime when she was honored as a “Star in the Classroom” by the Houston Texans and First Community Credit Union (FCCU). Houston Texans Wide Receiver Cecil Shorts III joined FCCU Assistant Vice President of Marketing Amber Magee in surprising Mayland with the award in recognition of making a positive impact in the lives of students. Kindergartener Izabelle Paul nominated Mayland for the award.
“I was so excited and almost speechless when Cecil Shorts came to see me,” said Mayland. “I am so honored to be a Star in the Classroom and to have one of my students nominate me. I feel blessed to have such an exciting experience as this.”
In addition to receiving a visit from a Houston Texans player, Mayland also received a Brian Cushing autographed jersey, two tickets to a Texans home game and a $500 donation to FBISD in her honor. For nominating Mayland, Izabelle received an autographed Houston Texans football.
During his visit to Oyster Creek, Shorts took the time to meet with students. He autographed football cards and answered questions students had about his career. “I had to work hard to be where I am today,” he said. Shorts credited many of his teachers for his success and reminded students to “stay focused so that you’re able to do amazing things.”
Before leaving the campus, Shorts appeared with Mayland and Izabelle on the school’s broadcast TV station.
