Central Fort Bend Chamber gets update on Hwy. 59 construction
TxDOT Transportation Engineer Grady Mapes addressed a crowd of over 50 business owners, elected officials and Central Fort Bend Chamber members at the TxDOT Business Round Table Update held at the Fort Bend Country Club in Richmond recently.
Mapes gave an overview of the current construction taking place along the Highway 36 and Interstate 69/Highway 59 corridor, listing the projected completion dates being between February and March of 2019. Mapes also spoke on new construction set to begin for Williams Way in January 2017.
Business owners expressed concerns of the road closures affecting business, primarily during Saturday mornings and shared concerns for their clients stating that more communication would be beneficial on knowing when road closures will take place and how to communicate to their clients the best alternate routes. Mapes communicated that closures are made mostly during Saturday morning hours due to the access of materials, however he will check the schedules to verify if an alternate time can be set in place.
One guest stated that signage should be made more noticeable while driving throughout the area, while another attendee questioned how the traffic from the upcoming fair will affect the area as well.
Mapes shared that any road closures will be made known seven days prior to the closure coming into effect and noted that improved signage will be added to Highway 36.
“We will attempt to avoid closures of 2218 and Highway 36 at the same time,” Mapes said.
He also noted that the fair committee is currently working with TxDOT to execute a plan for road access during the fair season. Mapes ensured that, “TxDOT will try and address the concerns of the community and businesses as best as we can” and continued in saying that “at this point, we are on schedule for completion for 2019 and we are looking good.” He also encouraged business owners to participate in the monthly stakeholder meetings.
