Chautauqua Talks: Sugar Land history lecture series begins November 13

November 7, 2012 by FortBendStar

The Sugar Land Heritage Foundation, in association with the Sugar Land Cultural Arts Foundation, is pleased to present a series of lectures on the history of Sugar Land.  The first lecture, “Sugar: The Essential Building Block of Sugar Land” will be presented on Tuesday, November 13, from 7:00-8:30pm, at the historic Sugar Land Auditorium, located at the intersection of Lakeview and Wood Streets, in Sugar Land.

This lecture will be the first of the inaugural “Sugar Land Chautauqua Talks”, a series of entertaining and educational presentations related to Sugar Land history, suitable for an audience of all ages.  The name for the series (pronounced shə-TAW-kwə), is based on an adult educational movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, called the Chautauqua Movement, which began in New York State and spread across rural America to small towns like Sugar Land.  In fact, the Sugar Land Auditorium, built in 1918, was the very site of Chautauqua events nearly 100 years ago!

Come remake history as the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation and Sugar Land Cultural Arts Foundation collaborate to revive a noteworthy part of our history—the Chautauqua Talks!  The guest lecturer for the November 13 event is Leon Anhaiser, a former Vice President of the Imperial Sugar Company, who is a native Sugar Lander with 45 years of experience in the sugar industry.  Mr. Anhaiser earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Sugar Engineering from Louisiana State University; he began his career in sugar as a process engineer and eventually became Imperial’s Vice President of Refinery Operations.  In addition, he was Plant Manager at C&H Sugar’s liquid sugar facility in Hawaii and has served as the Executive Director of Sugar Industry Technologists, Inc., an international organization dedicated to sugar refining, scientific research, and sugar processing equipment.

This rare presentation—suitable for adults and school-age children—will be held at no charge in the historic Sugar Land Auditorium, located on the Lakeview Elementary Campus, 226 Lakeview Drive, Sugar Land, on Tuesday, November 13, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.  For more information, please visit www.slheritage.org or www.slcaf.org.
