The Digital Bookmobile will make a stop on its coast-to-coast tour of the country at Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library, 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy, on Monday, November 25, from 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm. The traveling exhibit features hands-on displays and interactive workstations that show readers how to take advantage of digital technology to expand their reading platforms.
Sponsored by OverDrive, the Digital Bookmobile is housed inside an 18-wheel tractor-trailer. This 74-foot community-outreach vehicle is a high-tech update of the traditional bookmobile. The vehicle is equipped with broadband Internet-connected PCs, high-definition monitors, premium sound systems, and a Gadget Gallery featuring a variety of eReading devices. Interactive learning stations give visitors an opportunity to search Fort Bend County Libraries’ online digital collection, try out supported eReading devices, and sample eBooks and audiobooks. OverDrive eBooks are compatible with all major computers and devices, including iPhone®, iPad®, Nook®, Android™ phones and tablets, and Kindle®.
Aboard the Digital Bookmobile, library patrons can learn how to borrow eBooks and audiobooks from FBCL’s online OverDrive collection, which includes a wide variety of bestsellers and popular titles as well as classic literature for adults, teens, and children. The audiobooks and eBooks are accessible through the FBCL website, www.fortbend.lib.tx.us, or on the download stations at George Memorial Library in Richmond. Library patrons need only have a library card and Internet access to borrow titles in both eBook and audiobook form from the comfort and convenience of home, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Patrons may check out up to five downloadable books at any given time, and place holds on up to five titles. When a reserved title becomes available, the patron will be sent an email notification and will have three days to download the selection. The OverDrive eBooks and audiobooks may be checked out for a period of either 7 or 14 days. The system eliminates late fees through an automatic-return feature. At the end of the lending period, the files automatically expire and are immediately available for the next patron.
Fort Bend County Libraries’ digital collection is licensed through OverDrive, Inc., a leading vendor of downloadable digital books for libraries. The company also supplies the technology for the service.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677.
