As a classroom writing assignment, Meadows Elementary School fourth-grade teacher, Stacy Garcia, had her students write letters of appreciation to the District’s Police Department thanking the officers for the services they provide. The officers received approximately 60 letters that included words of appreciation and specific questions about their jobs.
When the officers received the letters, they were overjoyed and returned the kind gesture by writing back to the students. Not only did each student receive a response from an officer, but they received a response from the police chief as well.
“I personally delivered our response letters to the fourth-graders, and they were so excited to receive them,” said FBISD Police Chief David Rider. “They were comparing letters with each other and sharing comments the officers had written. These types of positive interactions help build strong relationships between our students and our officers, and allow students to see us in a role that is not just enforcement oriented.”
