The Clements Lady Ranger softball team has been one of the dominant teams in District 23 5A for the past 11 years; finishing in the top two during 10 of those seasons and sharing 6 district titles with Elkins. This year the Lady Rangers stand alone as the 2012 District 23 5A Champions.
The Lady Rangers finished the year with a district record of 15-2, 2 games better than 2nd place Travis. What ended up being a spectacular year for the Lady Rangers did not start off as one. Half way through the season, they held an overall record of 5-12. The Lady Rangers dealt with several injuries early on, had new and young inexperienced starters, and played a very tough non district schedule. The Lady Rangers really turned their season around, finishing the year with a 12-2 district record and a 7th district championship for the school.
The entire team contributed to win the district title. Sophomore Nikki Murray led the team in pitching. The offense was led by junior Darby Rosen, and senior Elise Nieser, Nikki Murray, and junior Caitlin Letterman. Several other players were vital to the team’s success as well. Brianna Sanchez was the leadoff hitter and set the table for the rest of the lineup. Paige Jones came up big with several key hits in crucial moments throughout the year, as well as some strong defensive plays to secure some wins. Tiffany Nelson shined bright when the moments were the biggest; she had a walk off double to win the first game of the year, had a huge double to spark a comeback win vs. Dulles, and the biggest moment of the year was her grand slam in extra innings against Elkins.
Other players that contributed to the District Championship are seniors Amy Garcia and KK Weeks, juniors Taylor Caldwell and Madison Hann, and freshmen Rylie Goldwait, Chloe Cordaway, Meredith Miller and Carrie Sistrunk.
