Clements High School senior, Cadet Lieutenant Commander Christine LoPiccolo, was recently recognized during the Texas State NJROTC Drill Competition at Texas A & M as the recipient of the Joseph C. Gilliam Academic Achievement Award.
The award recognizes one Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) cadet for outstanding academic achievement each year. The award consists of a laminated plaque containing a citation signed by the Chief of Naval Education and Training, and a biographical statement of the award’s namesake. In addition, the cadet winning the Gilliam Academic Achievement Award will receive a cash award of $1,000.
Even though it is not an essay writing contest, all contestants are required to submit a 500-750 word essay. This years’ topic: “The Navy JROTC has helped me develop a clear understanding of the necessity of good citizenship”. In addition, the cadet must provide highlight examples of positive reinforcement, leadership challenges and goal attainment that are attributable to the lessons learned and experiences of the NJROTC.
Cadet LoPiccolo is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Salvatore LoPiccolo.
