In 1982, when Highway 6 was just a two-lane road and there were perhaps more cows than people in Fort Bend County, a small synagogue opened its doors in a Missouri City fire station on FM2234.
By the High Holy Days of that year, Congregation Beth El (CBE) had more than 100 families and held services with a few hundred people at the Holiday Inn on West Belfort and SH59. Rabbi Ross London, who served the Jewish Federation of Houston, led the service assisted by cantoral soloist Ralph Katz, who has been a mainstay of this “Center of the Jewish Community in Fort Bend County” ever since.
To commemorate this important milestone, the Congregation Beth El is throwing a big “Pearls of Broadway” anniversary Gala and fundraiser on Saturday, March 24 at Safari Texas in Richmond from 7-11pm.
The evening will include dinner, dancing and special entertainment, featuring the singing talents of Cantor Ralph Katz and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s Abigail Coy. There will also be a silent auction as well as a number of other exciting activities throughout the evening .
“The man who has led us in song and more for all these 30 years will quite fittingly be honoring us with his talents on what promises to be a most wonderful occasion,” said Beth El’s president Bill Stern. “We look forward to a very large turnout.”
Tickets will soon be going on sale. There are also a number of under-writing opportunities that will be available for businesses, groups and individuals.
