Cornerstone Elementary extended program learns about health and wellness

Mayor Pro Tem, Jacquie Chaumette visited with students from Cornerstone Elementary extended program and spoke about the importance of health and wellness. Jacquie Chaumette is the Honorary Chair for Shape up Sugar Land’s youth committee. The Shape Up Sugar Land youth committee is a student run organization that is a sub-committee of the non-profit organization, Shape Up Sugar Land and that collaborates with the Fort Bend Independent School District. The committee strives to promote healthy choices and increased physical activity on school campuses. They also want to target the obesity epidemic currently impacting our youth.

The Shape up Sugar Land youth committee recently received a grant from YSA (Youth Service America) and during the spring semester they have been meeting to discuss strategies on how they can have the greatest and most influential impact on their community. The SUSL youth committee has challenged students and their families to take the 10,000 steps a day walk program.

The Shape Up Sugar Land youth committee members are:
Youth Director – Chandra Kovvali, junior, Kempner High School
Vice Chair – Vikash Ravi, junior, Hightower High School
Secretary – Donald Jones, senior, Hightower High School
Liaison – Michael Wang, sophomore , Clements High School
Liaison – Rio Lexann de Armas, sophomore, Austin High School
Web Coordinator – Rohan Konde, sophomore, Austin High School
Health News Reporter – Prerana Jasti, sophomore, Austin High School
