To recognize school staff for their efforts in creating a school environment that promotes wellness, the WATCH Your Wellness Committee is introducing a WATCH Healthy Campus award, which will designate each winning school as a “Champion of Health.”
The WATCH Heathly Campus award is a collaborative effort between Fort Bend ISD’s SHAC (School Health Advisory Council), the Fort Bend Medical Society Alliance, and UnitedHealthcare to highlight and share best practices in campus wellness programs. The award program will be piloted in FBISD schools this year, and if successful will continue to recognize schools for the efforts.
“Our goal is to show that a healthy and playful campus is a smart campus,” said Mary Kiernan, FBISD Safe and Drug Free Schools Specialist. “It’s a known fact that children who eat healthy meals and engage in regular physical activity perform better in school.”
To participate in the WATCH Healthy Campus award program, FBISD schools must create a Wellness Committee (comprised of school staff, students and parents), develop a personalized Campus Wellness Plan, host a Health/Wellness Night, and sponsor a campus-wide physical activity.
In addition, schools are required to meet five of the following criteria:
• Promote tobacco prevention
• Offer non-food based student rewards (such as extra time at recess, 10-minute dance party, etc.)
• Provide nutrition and physical activity in core classes
• Participate in the WATCH Health Fair
• Develop a measurement/key indicators of health change
• Provide a Staff Wellness Program
Schools that meet the criteria will receive a banner in the Fall of 2013, a cash prize to support future wellness activities, media recognition and healthier students and staff. Schools that are interested in participating must submit the program registration form before December 15.
