A Katy area bank robber is in custody after a Crime Stoppers tip leads authorities to his door. Donovan Vanderwesthuizen, who resides in the 20400 block of Chateau Bend Drive, in the unincorporated area of Harris County near Katy, was arrested last Wednesday at his home. He has been charged with robbery by threat, according to the Harris County District.
Fort Bend Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Haenel said Vanderwesthuizen was taken into custody about 11 p.m. that night without incident. He also faces charges of bank robbery in Fort Bend County.
In Fort Bend County, Vanderwesthuizen has been charged with the robbery of the First Community Credit Union on Cinco Ranch Boulevard. That robbery occurred on March 6, 2012, about 3:40 p.m. Haenel said Vanderwesthuizen walked into the credit union and handed the teller a note demanding money. He did not display a weapon; however, he did leave the premises with an undisclosed amount of cash. The same action played out at a nearby Harris County bank that same day.
After a Special Crime Stoppers Alert was issued, leads from a tip led to Vanderwesthuizen’s arrest, said Haenel. At press time he was still in custody of Fort Bend County, however he will be transferred to Harris County at a later time.
Vanderwesthuizen has a listed criminal history in Harris County for DWI offenses.
