The Drabek Elementary School Dragons are back-to-back champions in the Rockets “Read to Achieve” Program. The program challenged students, in grades 1-5, to see how many minutes they could read within a five-week span. Last year, the students read a total of 1,346,601 minutes. This year, students surpassed that number by reading a total of 2,048,846 minutes!
Throughout the program, school staff, the PTO, and business partners supported the students by providing various motivational activities and reading incentives. Staff decorated cafeteria walls with basketball hoops and bouncing basketballs to mark grade-level reading progress. The school also held a reading pep rally featuring Kempner High School’s freshmen basketball team. Raisin’ Cane and Benihana provided coupons for free kid’s meals to weekly class winners. Students also enjoyed weekly lunch-time music.
Thanks to the PTO Board, Drabek was able to send nearly 900 students to the “Read to Achieve” event at the Toyota Center. The event included teacher activities on the basketball court, student reading challenges, and motivational speeches from Rockets players. After Drabek was announced the Champion “Read to Achieve” School, the Top Readers for the Entire Grade Levels were announced. Drabek was proud to claim four “Grade Level Rockets’ Jam Fest Top Reader” award winners. Among them were: Ethan Wu, 1st grade; Holly Nguyen, 2nd grade; Eunice Esmas, 4th grade; and Urhum Syed, Overall Top Reader. The Top Grade Level winners each received a Leap Pad Reader and book. The Overall Top Reader received a gift card to the book store of his choice, a Kindle and four courtside tickets to a Rockets game, where he was introduced to more than 18,000 Rockets’ fans during the games’ halftime.
As the Champion “Read to Achieve” School, Drabek received 2,500 free books, 75 tickets to a Rockets game, and 75 Rockets t-shirts that will be raffled off in the future. In addition, the school also received a Rockets Reading Corner with new Houston Rockets furniture for the school’s library.
