Fourteen- year-old Boy Scout Travis Angle and his team of volunteers completed their work building sustainable fruit and vegetable garden beds to help seniors and families in need at Catholic Charities’ Mamie George Community Center, 1111 Collins Road.
Travis raised more than $2,500 from Richmond and Rosenberg-area businesses and organizations, including Living Earth, Home Depot, McCoy’s Building Supply, The Rotary Club of Richmond and donations from family and friends to use towards his Eagle Scout service project to build six planting beds.
“I was inspired to help after I worked a food fair at Mamie George and helped distribute food. There were 100 people in line and we were able to give items to everyone, but we ran out of watermelons because we only had 20,” Travis said. He added, “It was a real eye-opener to the needs of some people in our community and it also helped me understand the business world. I actually held business meetings in asking for donations.”
Travis is working with Scout Troop 828, sponsored by the St. Laurence Catholic Church. He said they first volunteered to help at the Mamie George Community Center’s self-select food pantry called Trini’s Corner Market where seniors and families are able to receive nutritious groceries and and household items. Then he decided to do even more and organized the garden project.
