Over 75 community leaders and elected officials gathered at Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels’ headquarters recently to deliver meals to the homebound, to see first-hand the needs of the elderly in our community. This annual event, March for Meals, provides an up-close and personal look at those who face hunger every day.
“Senior hunger continues in our community, and if it was not for our homebound program, we are not sure what would become of those we serve, over 1,100 elderly a day. We know they would have an empty plate, and we know being hungry creates other health and emotional problems. Bottom line, hunger hurts, especially when one is frail. These senior citizens did not plan for their golden years to turn out this way, but life threw them a curve ball. Now these folks are trying to live on only their social security checks, which do not stretch far enough to cover basic needs,” said Manuela Arroyos, CEO, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels.
After a continental breakfast and a brief program, each of the community leaders and elected officials were paired with a members of the board of directors or staff members to deliver meals to the homebound elderly.
“I sit on the Missouri City Community Development Block Grant Committee, so it was good for me to see the end result, to see the faces of those who receive the meals from the funds we provide. I applaud Fort Bend Seniors, for their caring of the older generation and to take time to check on them when meals are delivered. I was impressed with all they do, and it speaks volumes of the organization,” said Don Smith, City Council Member, District B, Missouri City.
Rosenberg Mayor Vincent Morales Jr also delivered meals. “Fort Bend Seniors, Meals on Wheels, is a wonderful program for the seniors in Rosenberg. It was a pleasure participating in the ‘March for Meals’ event, delivering nutritional meals and visiting with our City of Rosenberg seniors. I want to thank the board of directors, staff and the many volunteers that work so hard in making this program a success in our City, Fort Bend County, and neighboring counties,” said Mayor Morales Jr.
