As the Farmers Market at Imperial enters its first spring season, more than 80 local farmers and vendors are stocking up with an amazing selection of the freshest tasting, locally grown produce along with countless other springtime selections.
“We’ve had an eye on this time of year, knowing it brings out the best in fresh produce,” notes Keri Schmidt, president of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. “Folks are astonished when they come out and see the selections.”
Located at Highway 90 and Ulrich Street in front of the Imperial Sugar silos and historic Char House, the Farmers Market at Imperial is open every Saturday, rain or shine, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
A recent stroll through the Market uncovered some great springtime finds:
- Springfield Farm of Moulton, Texas gives a new meaning to fresh from the field with herbs, beet greens, arugula, spinach and carrots harvested just hours before the market.
- Animal Farm of Cat Spring, Texas offers freshly picked rainbow carrots, green garlic spring onion, green and yellow beans and black radishes. Plus, try out its selection of bok choy and pak choi.
- Enjoy mushrooms? Then stop by Kitchen Pride from Gonzales, Texas with its portabella, shiitake, white, oysters and baby bellas harvested the night before market.
- A selection of fresh Asian vegetables from Secret Garden includes bitter melon, broccoli, Chinese celery, jicama, okra, daikon, water cress and sugar snap peas.
- Gundermann Acres of Wharton, an exhibitor since the Farmers Market opened last October, presents a springtime selection of freshly picked strawberries, carrots and beets. The farm also offers honey from bees maintained in carefully selected farms in the Houston area where they pollinate crops and produce honey in pesticide-free environments.
- Nearby Warfel Farms offers purple, red and white radishes and a spring mix of lettuce among its selection of new items. It also showcases another springtime favorite – canned Strawberry Preserves.
However stocking up on fresh produce is just the start of one’s visit to the Farmers Market at Imperial.
The Market’s meat and dairy selections include lean, grass-fed beef, free range chickens and eggs, heritage pork and aged cheeses from the Law Ranch, Georgia’s Grass Fed Beef and Epps Family Planters of Calvert, Texas. Goat cheese fans will delight in selections from Hammonds Farms and Proverbs Farms.
Of course, all of that walking can build up an appetite. No worries – the Farmers Market at Imperial has that covered too.
At Angela’s Oven, enjoy breakfast pastries, fruit-filled croissants and handcrafted breads. Start the morning with sinfully delicious coffee cakes filled with fresh raspberries, blueberries and other springtime flavors from the Gooey Butter Girls. Enjoy bloody mary’s and breakfast tacos at Berryhill Baja Grill or gourmet coffee and tea from Grizzaffi Coffee.
Vegan-baked pastries, cinnamon rolls and vegan vegetable pot pies make Sinful Bakery one of the most popular spots at the market. Vietnamese sandwiches, barbecue and fajitas, handcrafted salsas, made-to-order sweet and salty popped corn, Italian ices and more ensure no one leaves the Farmers Market at Imperial hungry.
