On April 17, Mrs. Bush attended Main Street Theater’s production of Superfudge and afterwards announced the winners of the 4th annual “Magic of Reading” essay writing contest in Houston. In a unique partnership, Main Street Theater, The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy and KIPP DREAM Prep encouraged students from KIPP to write about valuable life lessons. Students in the 3rd and 4th grades were asked to write an essay based on the story of Superfudge by Judy Blume. The students spent some time in class learning about Mrs. Bush and her passion for reading. Teachers at KIPP used the essay contest as a writing exercise about how to laugh at difficult situations.
The students were asked to write their essay in response to a question from Mrs. Bush. The question from Mrs. Bush was:
“Many times we face challenges in life from other members of our family. Tell me a funny story about a time when you had to laugh in a difficult situation?”
