The Fort Bend Buyers Group is celebrating its 10th year of participating in the Fort Bend County Fair. The Fort Bend Buyers Group is a membership organization that uses its membership dues each year to participate in the auctions at the Fort Bend County Fair. This group also helps students who raised livestock projects and their animal did not make one of the sales.
Each year there are hundreds of students who participate in the Fort Bend County Fair by exhibiting FFA or 4-H livestock projects. These students are learning valuable life skills and responsibility through their projects. The Fort Bend Buyers Group was created to increase the community support for all Fort Bend County students at the Fair. Increasing numbers of FFA Chapters are organized in high schools in urban areas, and unfortunately the surrounding communities are not aware of their programs.
The group was started by Commissioner James Patterson, Linda Harris, Don Smithers, and Kim Icenhower. There has been an average of 85 members per year who join the Fort Bend Buyers Group, and in 2011 the group had 113 members. In the last nine years the Buyers Group has grown helped 454 students at the Fort Bend County Fair.
Membership dues are $100 each year to become a member of the Fort Bend Buyers Group. The Buyers Group designates a buyer to attend the Fort Bend County auctions and bid on student projects, as well as provide “add-ons”. Also, a portion of the funds each year is used to help the non-sale student projects.
