Leola Anifowoshe, of Richmond has launched this festival to benefit Shoes4School, a Fort County shoe charity to provide shoes for homeless and under priviledged children.
The festval/expo will be held Dec. 7- 8, 2013 at the Reliant Center, 1 Reliant Park, Houston. Doors open at 10 a.m., Saturday, and 11 a.m., Sunday.
This year’s event, themed, “Embrace Your Natural Beauty,” will showcase some of the nation’s best natural hair, health and beauty talent and exhibitors, but for Anifowoshe, the festival represents an opportunity to do much more.
“We have always done events to help raise funds for Shoes4School.org and the natural hair and beauty festival basically started five years ago as another way to do that.
“We are hoping to be able to have enough funds from the festival to purchase 500 to 1000 brand new shoes to distribute over the holidays, because a hole in the sole can leave a hole in the soul,” says Anifowoshe.
The Richmond-area resident has introduced a new component to this year’s festival, called KidsWorld, a mini-expo designed to empower and educate young people about natural hair, health and beauty to nurture self-acceptance and self-esteem.
The festival and expo is the largest African American Holiday Shopping Festival in the country. Coordinators are expecting over 150 exhibitors and over 10,000 attendees to create a very unique holiday shopping experience.
The festival will feature two non-stop days of entertainment on the main stage, with “Sunday’s Best” Season 5 winner, Joshua Rogers, and Season 4 runner up, Andrea Helms, taking the stage for an unforgettable performance on Dec. 8. The festival also will feature numerous workshops and seminars facilitated by experts in the natural hair, health and beauty industries.
Tickets are $10 for general admission; $25 for an all-inclusive workshop and show pass; children 12 and under are free. Vendor and sponsorship opportunities are still available. Partial proceeds benefit Shoes4School.org, a division of Keep Kids In School, Inc., a 501(c)3 organization focused on literacy and physical fitness. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations and also may be purchased at the door.
This is a must-attend community event for everyone who cares about their hair, family and health, young and old.
