Fort Bend ISD honors athletes earning scholarships

Fort Bend ISD honored 130 students who have earned athletic scholarships this year.

The ceremony, held at Wheeler Fieldhouse last Friday, was hosted by Fort Bend Athletic Director Rodney Chant and the athletic directors of the 11 Fort Bend ISD high schools.

“These 130 students plus the 53 students who signed commitment letters in February represent over $14 million in scholarships,” Chant said. “We are extremely proud of our students.”

Two of the students will be attending service academies. Connor Lepore, Austin High School, will be playing baseball at West Point.

“We visited West Point last fall and the campus was beautiful. The application process was lengthy but I am looking forward to it. Boot camp starts July 3 and finishes just as classes start in the fall,” Lepore said. “I plan on majoring in engineering and playing baseball. I think being on the baseball field will give me a little break from the West Point schedule.”

A profile of a recent West Point class showed that of 13,800 applicants, 4,120 were nominated by their congressional representatives. Of those nominated, 2,360 qualified academically and physically, and finally 1,257 were admitted. Of the 1,257 students that were admitted, 70 percent were in the top 20 percent of their class, and 92 percent participated in varsity athletics.

John Barber, Travis High School, will be throwing the discus and shot put at the Naval Academy.

“My induction day is June 29. When classes start, I plan to major in economics,” Barber said. “After graduating, I will serve on active duty for five years.”
