Fort Bend ISD will host the 2012 String Fling Concert on Thursday, February 23, at 7:00 pm at the Wheeler Field House,16403 Lexington Blvd.
This event will showcase beginning orchestra students from 12 FBISD middle school campuses, including Baines, Bowie, Crockett, Dulles, First Colony, Fort Settlement, Garcia, Hodges Bend, Lake Olympia, Quail Valley, Sartartia and Sugar Land.
This year’s guest performer will be renowned professional bassist, Dennis Whittaker. Whittaker graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education from Baylor University and a Masters of Music from Northwestern University. His teachers included Paul Ellison, Jeff Bradetich, Eugene Levinson, Mark Whitney, and Michael Cameron. In 1987, Whittaker won the Gary Karr Foundation National Double Bass competition and was the recipient of a double bass donated by the Karr Foundation.
He has held the principal Double Bass position at the Houston Grand Opera since 1996 and has appeared on six world premier recordings with that organization. He has worked as the instructor of Double Bass at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music since 1997.
In addition to conducting master classes around the world, Whittaker has performed at the Aspen Music Festival, and served as the principal bassist for the Festival de dui Mondi in Spoleto, Italy to celebrate Gian Carlo Menotti’s 90th birthday.
Come and support the efforts of these talented young musicians from Fort Bend ISD’s string orchestra programs as they perform with renowned bassist Dennis Whittaker. Admission is free.
