A six-member math team from Sugar Land tied for the second place at an international online math contest. 1,660 middle school teams from 44 countries competed in the 2013 Purple Comet Math Contest in April 2013. The middle school teams are given 60 minutes to complete 20 problems. The problems range in difficulty from easy to extremely challenging.
The team (Named Mittenpunkt) included the following students:
• Fort Settlement Middle School: Eric Li (8th grade), Byron Xu (8th grade), Kevin Rao (8th grade), Jeff Ren (8th grade), and Archer Wang (6th grade)
• Colony Meadows Elementary School: Andrew Cai (3rd grade)
The students worked collaboratively and solved 19 problems correctly. The team earned first place in Texas and tied for second place worldwide.
