Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse, Inc. (FBRC) hosts a summer camp program for children living at the Fort Bend County Women’s Center. Now in its fourth year, this project has come to be a very special opportunity for everyone involved.
The camp lasts almost the entire summer; bringing caring FBRC counselors to the women’s center shelter to help children begin healing and gain confidence in their unfamiliar surroundings. Interactive games, activities, field trips and a talent show presented to the parents make it fun for the children to discover their potential, build resiliency and reduce their risk for future substance abuse.
The program is the result of a longstanding cooperative relationship between FBRC and the Fort Bend County Women’s Center and has shown success over the past three years. The shelter reports that the children who participate benefit from the structure, lessons about sharing their feelings, hopes and dreams and that they show heightened confidence. It reminds them of the good things in their world.
