The holidays are here and Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels is looking for Christmas Elves to help deliver meals to the elderly during the month of December.
“We hope people in the community will help us deliver holiday meals to the shut-in elderly who otherwise would have an empty plate,” said Susan Whitacre, director, Volunteers, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels.
According to Whitacre, volunteers can ride along with another volunteer, or drive their own car. Drivers though have to be over 18 and to ride with another volunteer, 16 or over is required.
“Those interested may deliver meals once a week, or once or twice a month. We work with your schedule. Also, for those who will be taking time off this holiday season, it would be a great family outing. Families can deliver meals together and for many it is what this season is about. So much of the time we think about giving gifts, when all our elderly in our community need is a little bit of your time to deliver a meal, which changes their lives.”
Also, in delivering meals, volunteers can choose to deliver three, four, or eight or ten meals, it all depends on how much time a volunteers has available. Most volunteers delivering meals donate about a hour or two of their time a week.
Meals are delivered between 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and on Fridays, a hot meal and two box lunches for the weekend are delivered.
“We have many different distribution centers throughout Fort Bend County, making it as convenient as possible for volunteers to pick-up the meals close to home and deliver in their area and community,” Whitacre said.
Also, a one-hour volunteer orientation is required and volunteer applications are available on the website, www.fortbendseniors.org.
